Greek civilization continues to fascinate us and captivate our attention. The art and culture of Greece, the mathematics, the philosophy, the philosophers, from Aristotle to Socrates to Plato have had enormous influence upon the development of Western Civilization throughout subsequent centuries.

Left behind and continuing to mesmerize are the archeological ruins of great works of architecture at Athens and the iconic Parthenon other sites, endure after thousands of years, representing the tremendous advancements which saw their zenith in Hellenistic civilization.

Similarly, Greek mythology continues to fascinate to this day, in particular the characteristics and stories of the twelve gods and goddesses of Mount OlympusZeus, Hera, Hades, Poseidon, Athena, Ares, Apollo, Artemis, Hermes, Aphrodite, Hephaestus and, Hestia.

Not only does it permeate popular culture, (think World Famous Apollo Theater and The Poseidon Adventure as typical modern day name-checking), it has also been the subject of classical and contemporary literature as well as movies and television. Helen of Troy, for instance, was the subject of a classic silent film, Helena. In the late 1990s, The Odyssey became a TV mini-series. Most recently, in early 2010 we had Clash of the Titans, and a sequel is said to be in production for a 2010 release. So the interest in the Greeks goes on, making it a very timely costume choice. The impact on education whether it be the study of philosophy and logic or the fraternities and sororities of college life, our Western civilization has its origins in the Greek culture, art and traditions.

According to mythology, Aphrodite’s origins are unclear. She is said to be daughter of Zeus, by some accounts, most famously that of the legendary poet Homer, and by others she seems to have a more fanciful origin, as essentially the spawn of mysterious sea foam. As is well known, the Roman mythology essentially subsumed that of the Greek, and so Aphrodite became the Roman goddess Venus who, in modern times is as well known if not better known than her Grecian original. Although from a different system of deities, often associated is the Egyptian goddess of love, Hathor. She is considered by some to be a symbol of female empowerment.

We are similarly fascinated by ancient Greek clothing, the long flowing styles seen on the classic Grecian urns and in the surviving sculptures that lend themselves to contemporary reproductions. The famously seen garment on both women and men is known as a chiton. It was made of wool, silk or linen, often with a distinctive border at the hemline.

The clothing is remarkably pragmatic, especially when we compare it to our overly complicated styles with buttons and zippers. Yes, timeless clothing that consists of simple, yet attractive draping, flattering the human figure with a minimum of excess frill, we imagine the ancient Greeks were quite fashionable as well as comfortable in their day-to-day lives in these flowing fabrics such as spun linen. Archeological evidence shows the clothing to be often quite colorful with rich and ornate designs despite our persistent image of the plain white and ivory gowns and fancy dresses.

Clash of the Titans, based on the Greek myth of Perseus has brought the ancient world, as wellspring for Halloween and special occasion costuming once again. The vivid and popular movie which is a remake of the 1981 original depicts the quest of Perseus, the mortal son of the god Zeus to defeat the underworld and its deadly influence and save the earth and the heavens.

In the contemporary popular imagination there is often a blending of the Roman and Greek mythology, so do not be surprised if you or your child, decked out in a goddess of love outfit are variously called Aphrodite or Venus! Either way, it’s a compliment! Much success in your search for the perfect Aphrodite Costume!
